Type of escape — Local islands
Beyond the resort bubble lies a living, breathing Maldives — fishing villages, coral-fringed local beaches, whale sharks at sunrise, and people who have called these atolls home for generations. We'll take you there.
Only a local can offer this
Most travel agencies sell the Maldives from a brochure. We grew up here. Our team knows which local guesthouse has the best house reef, which island sees whale sharks in October, which sandbank appears at low tide that only the fishermen know about. That's not something you can Google.
Talk to a local expertWhy choose local
Walk through real fishing villages, visit local mosques, taste home-cooked Maldivian curry and mas huni. This is daily life on these islands — and you're invited in.
Whale sharks at Dhigurah, manta rays at Ukulhas, sea turtles nesting on Fulidhoo. Local islands sit beside some of the richest marine ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.
Quality local guesthouses cost a fraction of resort prices. That means more nights in paradise, more excursions, and more money spent on experiences — not overheads.
Stay with families, share meals with locals, learn to fish at dawn. The relationships you build on a local island stay with you long after the tan fades.
Your money goes directly into local communities. Local island tourism supports Maldivian families, guesthouses, and small businesses — not international resort chains.
Secret sandbanks, hidden snorkel spots, the fisherman who takes three guests out at sunrise. These experiences don't appear on any booking platform. They come from knowing people.
Hand-picked islands
Practical knowledge
A local island holiday is different from a resort — wonderfully so. Here's everything you need to know before you go, from someone who grew up here.
Ask us anything →The Maldives is a Muslim nation. In village areas, shoulders and knees should be covered out of respect. Each island has a designated bikini beach — usually a sandbank or a separate area — where swimwear is perfectly fine. We'll always tell you exactly what applies on your island.
Local island accommodation ranges from simple, clean guesthouses to boutique properties with infinity pools and ocean-view rooms. We hand-pick every property we recommend. No surprises — just honest, quality stays.
Most local islands are reached by speedboat from Malé or from a domestic airport transfer. Journey times vary from 20 minutes to 3 hours depending on your island. We arrange all transfers — no navigating local ferry timetables on your own.
Maldivian food is extraordinary — freshly caught tuna, coconut-based curries, roshi flatbread, and tropical fruit straight from the farm. Most guesthouses serve a mix of local and international dishes. Alcohol is not available on local islands (only on resort islands).
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the local currency, though US dollars are widely accepted. Most guesthouses and shops accept cards. Mobile data and WiFi are available on all the islands we recommend.
Making the choice
Can't decide? We can combine both — start on a local island, finish at a resort.
Things to do
Swim alongside the ocean's gentle giants. Dhigurah offers year-round whale shark encounters — a bucket-list experience.
Join local fishermen at dawn for traditional hand-line fishing. The freshest catch often ends up as your dinner the same evening.
Private sandbanks appear at low tide and disappear by evening. We arrange champagne (or fresh coconuts) and a boat — you bring the sunset.
World-class dive sites with hammerheads, eagle rays, and vibrant coral gardens. Local islands sit beside protected marine reserves.
Wander through fishing villages with a local guide. Visit a mosque, watch boat builders at work, and taste traditional Maldivian snacks.
Ukulhas is world-famous for manta ray cleaning stations. Snorkel or dive alongside these graceful creatures in their natural habitat.
The lagoons glow with bioluminescence after dark. Night snorkelling with a torch reveals an entirely different underwater world — octopus, lobster, sleeping turtles.
Learn to make traditional mas huni, rihaakuru, and fresh roshi with a local family. Take home recipes — and memories — that last a lifetime.
